What students practice

  • Calculate the beat values of half notes, dotted notes, beamed eighth notes, and sixteenth notes.
  • Name a missing note or rest that completes a measure in 2/4, 3/4, or 4/4.
  • Place starting counts under a rhythm containing quarter, eighth, and half notes.

Classroom use

Use this page after students have encountered the printed rhythm symbols. The quick reference supports quiet independent practice, and the final counting example gives teachers a short check of subdivision. Ask students to explain one calculation rather than checking only the final number.

Common questions

What beat unit does the worksheet use?

Every example treats the quarter note as one beat. The page uses 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4, not compound meter.

Do students need instruments or a metronome?

No. The tasks require only the printed page and a pencil.

Are different counting syllables accepted?

The printed task requests numbers and ampersands. Teachers can also recognize an equivalent count that places the same note starts correctly.
