Chord Grid Reader helps beginning guitar students decode Em, Am, C, and G chord diagrams. Eight questions ask students to read fret numbers, identify open and unplayed strings, and count strings without confusing fret positions with finger numbers.

What students practice

  • Read strings 6-1 from left to right on the chord grids.
  • Identify fret positions from diagram dots.
  • Distinguish open-string O symbols from unplayed-string X symbols.
  • Interpret the specific Em, Am, C, and G voicings shown.

A short teaching routine

Point out low E and high E on a grid, then model the difference between a string number and a fret number. Review O and X before students answer the eight questions.

Use the page before a first chord-playing lesson or as a quick reading check. With guitars available, ask students to locate one diagrammed position at a time; successful written work does not require playing the full chords.

Common questions

Do the dots show which fingers to use?

No. They show where to press. The worksheet asks students to read fret and string information, not prescribed fingerings.

Which G chord shape is used?

The grid uses 3-2-0-0-0-3 from string 6 to string 1 in standard E-A-D-G-B-E tuning.
