How to use the activity

Introduce the target symbol before handing out a maze. Ask students to locate its notehead, stem, flags, dots, or rest shape. Then have them trace from START to FINISH without crossing a wall. A different symbol or dead end means they should turn back. The symbol example and short story appear below each maze.

Use a selected worksheet as a notation warm-up, a quiet early-finisher activity, or review after introducing a rhythm symbol. Choose the target based on what students have learned rather than treating the maze number as a grade level. The activity practices visual symbol recognition; it does not assess rhythm performance or establish beat values without a meter context.

Printing and learning support

Print at actual size on US Letter paper, or use your printer’s fit setting if needed. Check the first page before printing a class set. For an individual activity, select its page number in the student packet or open its separate PDF from the ZIP.

Students who need support can trace with a finger first, use a larger printout, or work with a partner who describes the next symbol. These are visual, print-oriented worksheets rather than screen-reader-accessible activities.

Using the teacher answer keys

Each key uses the same maze number, title, symbols, and walls as its student page. Its bold gray route leads from the start opening to the finish opening. Keep the key packet separate when distributing student handouts.
