Note Value Practice: 10 Printable Worksheets
Free Music Worksheets / Music Theory
Choose a note-value practice sheet by the task students need to review. These ten downloads include value identification and rhythm arithmetic. For these worksheets, use a quarter note as one beat: whole note = 4, half note = 2, and eighth note = ½. A rest has the duration of its corresponding note in these exercises. Establish this convention before students calculate; note values do not represent the same number of beats in every meter.
Find a starting point in two questions
Use the quarter-note-equals-one-beat convention above. Show a half note and a quarter note, then ask: “How many beats altogether?” (3 beats.) Next ask: “What note would complete a four-beat total?” (A quarter note.) Ask students to explain their reasoning before choosing a sheet.
- The symbols or values are uncertain: begin with Worksheet 1: identify note values.
- The values are correct, but the sum is not: use Worksheet 2: add two note values; write each value below its symbol before adding.
- The sum is correct, but the missing value is unclear: use Worksheet 7: complete a four-beat total; subtract the known total from four.
- Both answers are secure: choose a specific next skill below rather than assigning every sheet. Eighth-note calculations, rest values, and comparisons test different skills.
These are arithmetic checks, not a complete rhythm assessment. Follow a written response with a short counted or performed example to check whether students can maintain the pulse.

Check understanding, not just totals
Ask students to name the note or rest, state its value using the worksheet’s beat convention, and explain the operation before giving the total. When an answer differs, compare the symbol and the calculation separately. Use a different sheet only when its task matches the skill you want to revisit.
