Keyboard Detective: Find the White Keys

Piano Worksheets · All Free Music Worksheets

Keyboard Detective gives beginning piano students 12 clues to solve on a numbered keyboard image. Students locate white-key note names, find repeated notes, and move left or right by a stated number of white keys. They write key numbers rather than letter names, making it easy to check exactly which key they chose.

What students practice

  • Use groups of two and three black keys as landmarks.
  • Locate white keys by their letter names.
  • Recognize the same note name in different parts of a keyboard.
  • Follow left/right directions and count moves between white keys.

A short teaching routine

Begin by finding a group of two black keys and the C immediately to its left. Then find a group of three and the F immediately to its left. Review the repeating white-key sequence C, D, E, F, G, A, B before students work independently.

For the movement clues, model moving one white key from a starting point without counting the starting key. Ask students to point to the numbered key that supports each answer. If a piano or keyboard is available, extend the activity by finding the same note names on the instrument.

Common questions

Do students need a piano to complete this?

No. The numbered keyboard image supplies all the information needed. A real keyboard is useful for optional follow-up practice.

Does this worksheet identify middle C?

No. It shows a section of a keyboard without octave labels. Students identify note names and locations within the picture, not a specific middle C.

Where is the answer key?

Use the separate answer-key-only download, or print page 2 of the combined PDF. The student-only download contains no answers.
