Clarinet problems and solutions are easier to manage when the teacher identifies the exact symptom before changing equipment or technique. The most effective approach is to isolate one variable at a time. Check the reed and instrument first, establish a stable physical setup, and then address the specific playing skill that needs improvement.

Before correcting the student’s technique, use this basic clarinet troubleshooting sequence:

“Why does my clarinet squeak?” is one of the most common questions asked by beginning clarinetists. A clarinet squeak occurs when the instrument responds at an unintended pitch or overtone.
Clarinet squeaking problems may appear randomly, during finger changes, while crossing the register break, or at the beginning of articulated notes.
First, inspect the reed. Confirm that it is centered on the mouthpiece and aligned appropriately near the mouthpiece tip. Replace it if the tip is chipped, split, warped, or visibly damaged.
Next, ask the student to sustain a comfortable note without moving the fingers. If the note is stable, add one finger movement at a time. Watch whether each finger completely covers its tone hole and whether the fingers remain close to the instrument.
If the squeak occurs during articulation, have the student begin the note with air only. Once the tone is stable, add a light tongue release. This helps determine whether the student is striking the reed too forcefully or stopping the air between notes.
If the same note squeaks for several players, the instrument may have a mechanical leak.
Keep the air moving through the note. Seal the tone holes completely, keep the fingers close, and use the tongue only to release the sound.
Do not automatically tell the student to bite harder. Increased jaw pressure may temporarily suppress one squeak while creating a thin tone, poor intonation, reduced flexibility, and fatigue.
An airy clarinet tone contains more breath noise than focused clarinet sound. Some breathiness is normal for a beginning player, but a persistent airy or fuzzy clarinet tone usually points to a reed, embouchure, air-support, mouthpiece, or mechanical problem.
Begin by checking the reed and mouthpiece. Confirm that the reed is centered, secure, and free from visible damage.
Have the student form the embouchure without the instrument. The lower lip should cushion the reed without being rolled excessively over the lower teeth. The corners should remain firm enough to prevent air leakage, while the jaw stays stable rather than clenched.
Ask the student to inhale quietly and release a continuous, energized stream of air. The goal is not simply “more air.” The air must be steady, supported, and focused.
Test a mouthpiece-and-barrel sound if this is part of your teaching approach. Focus on stable response and tone rather than forcing every student and equipment combination to produce one universal pitch.
If the clarinet airy tone remains on the same notes with different reeds and players, have the instrument checked for leaks.
Send the air forward continuously. Keep the corners firm enough to seal, but do not squeeze the reed shut.
Clarinet register break problems occur most often when students move between the throat-tone area and the clarion register. Crossing the break on clarinet requires coordinated finger movement, stable air, appropriate voicing, complete tone-hole coverage, and precise register-key timing.
Begin without articulation. Have the student sustain the lower note and move slowly to the upper note while maintaining continuous air.
Use this sequence:
Practice the smallest possible clarinet register transition rather than repeatedly playing an entire scale. A two-note pattern makes it easier to see which finger moves late or which tone hole is not fully covered.
Do not restart the air for the upper note. Carry the same air through one coordinated finger change.
Use short register-break exercises during warm-ups. Begin slowly and increase the tempo only after the fingers, air, and register key remain coordinated.
A grunt or undertone occurs when the clarinet produces a lower, muffled, or unfocused response instead of the intended upper-register note.
This upper-register problem is sometimes mistaken for weak air alone, but the cause may involve voicing, finger coverage, reed response, or the register mechanism.
Ask the student to maintain a stable jaw and think of a slightly higher internal tongue position. The change should occur inside the mouth without visible tension or exaggerated facial movement.
Have the student slur from a comfortable lower note into the clarion register while sustaining a focused air stream.
If the note still produces an undertone, test another reed and check the right-hand tone holes. Even a small finger leak may prevent the upper note from responding.
If several players experience the same problem, inspect the register mechanism and seek repair assistance when appropriate.
Keep the jaw steady, raise the tongue slightly inside the mouth, seal every tone hole, and send focused air through the transition.
When a clarinet note refuses to speak, the teacher should determine whether the cause is the fingering, finger coverage, reed, air support, instrument assembly, or keywork.
Confirm the fingering first. Then have the student play the note immediately below and above the problem note. This helps identify whether the issue is isolated or connected to a larger mechanical pattern.

Warm the clarinet and inspect the barrel position. Ask the student to sustain a note while increasing air speed without creating unnecessary volume or tension.
Encourage a stable embouchure and focused tongue position. If the pitch sags at the ends of phrases, practice maintaining air support through the release.
Keep the air alive through the entire note. Do not let the support disappear before the sound ends.
Clarinet articulation problems may sound heavy, slapped, delayed, uneven, or disconnected. Clear articulation depends on continuous air and a small, efficient tongue movement.
Begin with air-only starts. Ask the student to establish the tone, then lightly touch the reed with the tongue to interrupt it.
Next, practice repeated notes using one continuous stream of air. The tongue should briefly release and return without changing the embouchure.
Use slow rhythmic patterns before increasing speed.
The air creates the sound. The tongue releases and separates it.
Use one-note articulation exercises during warm-ups. Listen for continuous air beneath the repeated attacks.
Clarinet finger technique becomes unreliable when fingers lift too high, move independently, strike the keys forcefully, or fail to cover the tone holes completely.
Ask the student to curve the fingers naturally and keep them close to the tone holes and keys. The right thumb should support the clarinet without forcing the wrist into an extreme position.
Practice short patterns slowly enough that every finger can move together. Increase the tempo only after the motion becomes clean and repeatable.
For little-finger passages, isolate the exact key changes rather than repeatedly playing the entire scale or excerpt.
Move less. Keep each finger close enough to return to the instrument immediately.

Inspect the reed against a flat surface and bright light. Look for chips, warping, discoloration, splitting, or an uneven tip.
Center the reed on the mouthpiece and secure it with the ligature. The ligature should hold the reed without unnecessary pressure.
Compare the response using another reed of the same strength. If needed, test a nearby strength.

Encourage students to rotate several playable reeds rather than depending on one reed until it becomes unusable.

An airy clarinet tone may result from insufficient air support, loose embouchure corners, poor reed placement, an unsuitable reed, too little mouthpiece in the mouth, or an instrument leak.

Seek professional repair when the same notes fail consistently for multiple players, pads do not seal, keys move improperly, bridge mechanisms do not align, springs are disconnected, or a known working setup does not produce a normal response.
