What if your rehearsal operated more like a research lab than a routine?
A research-driven music rehearsal does not require a university study, complicated statistics, or a complete change in teaching philosophy. It begins with a simpler habit: identify one variable, observe what actually happens, make a deliberate adjustment, and measure the result.
In Season 7, Episode 11 of The Music Educator Podcast, Bill Stevens presents a five-step system music teachers can use to examine rehearsal time, student engagement, teacher talk, musical independence, and instructional effectiveness.
The objective is not to make teaching mechanical. It is to replace vague impressions with useful evidence while preserving the musical judgment, responsiveness, and human connection that effective teaching requires.

A research-driven music rehearsal is a rehearsal in which instructional decisions are informed by observation, evidence, reflection, and repeated testing.
The teacher still relies on musical expertise. The difference is that assumptions are checked against what students actually do.
Instead of asking only, “Did that rehearsal feel productive?” the teacher also asks:
These questions turn reflection into a repeatable process.
Music teachers make hundreds of decisions during a rehearsal. While conducting, listening, correcting, monitoring behavior, managing time, and anticipating the next problem, it is difficult to observe every part of the instructional process accurately.
A rehearsal may feel successful because the final performance improved. However, that improvement does not automatically reveal:
Video and simple rehearsal coding provide a second perspective.
In a study of preservice choral teachers, participants compared estimated teacher-talk time with recorded time. After analyzing their video, their estimates became more accurate and their teacher talk decreased during a subsequent rehearsal. The study supports video review as a practical reflective tool, although reduced talk alone should not be treated as proof of better teaching.
Do not begin by trying to evaluate the entire rehearsal.
Choose one observable variable, such as:
Define the variable before recording.
“Improve rehearsal efficiency” is too broad. “Reduce the average time between stopping and restarting” is measurable.
“Build student independence” is a worthy goal, but it needs observable evidence. A measurable version might be, “After the second performance, students will identify the primary balance problem before the director explains it.”
Record 10 to 15 minutes of a normal rehearsal. Choose a segment that represents typical teaching rather than a specially prepared demonstration.
Follow all school, district, and family policies regarding recording, storage, student privacy, and consent. When possible, position the camera so the recording captures your instruction and the ensemble’s sound without unnecessarily identifying individual students.
Do not attempt to analyze the rehearsal while teaching. Conduct the rehearsal normally and review the recording later.
A short, representative sample is more useful than an hour of video that never gets examined.
Rehearsal coding means placing observable events into simple categories.
A basic coding system might include:
Use a timer or the recording’s timestamp. Approximate measurements are acceptable if they are applied consistently.
For a more focused review, code only the variable selected in Step 1. If the goal is to examine teacher talk, record:
The goal is not to generate impressive data. The goal is to obtain evidence that can guide one useful decision.
Less teacher talk is not automatically better.
Some explanations must be detailed. Teachers need time to establish safety procedures, introduce unfamiliar concepts, explain historical or stylistic context, and correct misunderstandings.
The more useful questions are:
Effective rehearsal language is concise because it is precise, not because teachers are racing against a stopwatch.
Students cannot independently solve a problem they are not prepared to hear, understand, or perform.
Edwin Gordon’s concept of audiation describes giving musical meaning to sounds that are heard or recalled mentally. The Gordon Institute for Music Learning explains that audiation supports tonal and rhythmic understanding across listening, performance, improvisation, and composition.
This has an important implication for research-driven music teaching: before measuring whether students can solve a musical problem, determine whether they possess the underlying readiness.
For example, students may struggle with:
When readiness is missing, the solution is not simply more repetition. The teacher may need to provide aural preparation, sequencing, modeling, movement, pattern instruction, or a clearer musical reference.

Select one change that directly addresses the evidence.
Possible adjustments include:
Change only one important variable at a time. If several procedures change simultaneously, it becomes difficult to determine which adjustment produced the result.
Use the revised strategy in a comparable rehearsal segment and measure the same variable again.
Ask:
A successful adjustment can be retained and refined. An unsuccessful adjustment is still useful evidence. It may show that the strategy was poorly matched to the students’ readiness, the musical task, or the rehearsal context.

The long-term purpose of research-driven music teaching is not simply to make the director more efficient. It is to help students become increasingly capable of directing their own learning.
Self-regulated musicians learn to:
Research involving a structured self-regulated music-practice curriculum for high school instrumentalists found improvements in areas including performance achievement and students’ perceptions of their self-regulation and practice self-efficacy. The findings should not be treated as a universal guarantee, but they support explicitly teaching students how to plan, monitor, and evaluate musical work.
This transfer of responsibility should be gradual. The director teaches the standard, models the process, limits the initial task, observes the result, and expands responsibility as students demonstrate readiness.

The written record makes reflection concrete and helps prevent one dramatic moment from defining the entire rehearsal.
Select a short portion connected to one instructional question.
Record times, actions, and musical results without evaluating your personality or overall worth as a teacher.
Look for repetition. Did explanations consistently run long? Did students improve more quickly after modeling? Did transitions consume more time than expected?
Choose a small action you can apply during the next comparable rehearsal.
Decide what evidence would indicate that the adjustment helped.
This process is brief enough to sustain and specific enough to improve instruction.
Measure time spent correcting individual notes versus addressing transferable concepts. Track whether students can apply a tone, articulation, balance, or pulse correction to a second passage.
Examine the relationship between verbal explanation, physical demonstration, student modeling, and the resulting bowing, intonation, or ensemble coordination.
Track how students respond to spoken descriptions, vocal models, text work, movement, and guided listening. Observe whether vowel, diction, breath, or balance corrections persist.
Measure transitions between explanation and performance, time spent tuning or organizing equipment, and whether students can diagnose chord, rhythm, or right-hand problems in partners.
Use short observation periods. Track active music-making, transitions, student responses, movement, pattern imitation, and opportunities for children to make musical decisions.
One clear question produces more useful evidence than a complicated observation system that cannot be sustained.
The quality, timing, and result of the explanation matter more than an arbitrary percentage.
Students can perform continuously without improving. Connect time measurements to a musical or instructional outcome.
Video is only useful when it leads to observation, reflection, and a specific next action.
Small controlled changes make cause and effect easier to interpret.
The purpose is professional learning, not self-criticism. Record what happened, identify one pattern, and make one reasonable adjustment.
A strategy cannot produce independence when students lack the musical knowledge required to use it.
