What students practice

  • Match major-scale degrees 1-7 with do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, and ti.
  • Translate short patterns between scale degrees and solfege.
  • Complete an ascending major-scale syllable pattern.
  • Explain why movable do remains degree 1 when the key changes.

A short teaching routine

Speak the scale degrees and syllables together, then model a three-note pattern in both forms. Give students time to complete the written page before adding any singing.

For an optional vocal extension, choose a comfortable starting pitch and sing the patterns with teacher guidance. Repeat a pattern from a new starting pitch to demonstrate that the syllable relationships stay the same.

Common questions

Is this movable do or fixed do?

It uses movable do in major keys. Do is scale degree 1 and is not always the pitch C.

Does the page use sol or so?

It uses the spelling sol throughout. The upper do is one octave above the first do and remains scale degree 1.
